  • What is PTFE®

    Polytetrafluoroethylene (ptfe®) commercially known as TEFLON® ALGOFLON® HOSTAFLON® F LUON® is a polymer of tetrafluoroethylene which has a series of physical-chemical features not yet found in any other plastics.

  • PTFE® properties

    Chemical properties
    Ptfe is inert to all chemical reagents known so far. It reacts only if in contact with elementary state alkali metals, chlorotrifluoride and elementary fluorine at high temperature and pression. Ptfe is insoluble in any solvent at temperatures up to 300° c. Only at temperatures closed to the crystalline melting point some highly fluorinated oils can make it swell and dissolve.

    Thermal properties
    Ptfe has a low thermal transmission coefficient and it is therefore considered a thermal insulator. It is non-flammable and it is stable for an extremely long period of time up to 260° c.

    Electrical properties
    Ptfe has excellent dielectric properties in a wide range of temperatures and frequencies. Being practically zero water absorption, its characteristics remain unchanged even after prolonged exposure to atmospheric agents. The dielectric strength is not at all influenced by the operating temperature. ARC resistance is remarkable and the action of the arc does not cause carbon deposits but only nonconductive vapors. The other electrical properties are particularly interesting too.

    Mechanical properties
    The mechanical properties of Ptfe, referred to a temperature of 23° C, are shown in the following table. It is important to note that at temperatures ranging from 19° C to 21° C, the material has a transition point, determined by a change in its crystalline structure, which causes a variation in volume of 1%. Other characteristics of Ptfe are non-adhesiveness and low coefficient of friction, particularly with high loads.info ptfe

    Glass Properties: high resistance to wear and to chemical wear except for the alkali and the hydrofluoric acid
    Applications: wear-resistant bearings that must operate in contact with very hard surfaces, valve seats
    Coal Properties: good thermal conductivity. Good wear-resistant, limited resistance to chemical oxidizing agents
    Applications: high speed dynamic applications
    Graphite Properties: good wear-resistant
    Applications: shaft bearings at high speed, even in contact with medium-hard surfaces
    Molybdenum disulphide Properties: low coefficient of static friction with low specific loads, good wear- resistant
    Application: sliding bearings subject to high stresses
    Bronze Properties: high resistance to compression, very limited wear, limited resistance chemical agents
    Application: support pads for heavy loads subject to frequent impacts
    Stainless steel Properties: high compressive strength and high resistance to chemical agents, no electrostatic charges
    Application: bearings and sliding bearings operating at low-medium speeds and heavy specific loads
    Special formulations Application: segments for dry compressors. Spherical fifth wheel couplings, pivot bearings, guides and bearings for CNC machines and high-precision machine tools.
